Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library Placemaking Plan

Client:

Project Description:

Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library

Location:

Whitestown, Ind.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library engaged FRMWRK to create a placemaking plan for its new branch location in Whitestown, Indiana. Working in collaboration with the HMMPL Foundation and library staff, FRMWRK developed a programmatic vision for the 10-acre site, which incorporates an existing multi-use trail and over 6 acres of lush woodlands. Echoing the architectural concept of the library itself, the design introduces a series of "outdoor rooms," each offering unique thematic and functional experiences designed to support the library’s mission and vision.

The plan underscores a commitment to universal design by integrating multi-sensory environments tailored to enhance the experience of visitors of all ages and abilities. These include a children's sensory garden, a multi-sensory playspace, and a nature playscape, crafted to enrich both educational and recreational experiences. Additionally, the site features the Story Walk Trail, a network of themed Little Free Libraries, a Storyteller’s Terrace, and an outdoor classroom. These elements collectively foster a dynamic space where individuals of all ages and abilities can engage deeply with literature, learning, and nature
