Client:

Project Description:

City of Hendreson Parks and Recreation Department

Location:

Henderson, Nev.

The City of Henderson, Nevada, engaged FRMWRK to lead the development of its city-wide Parks and Recreation Master Plan. A key focus of this plan is to develop new and innovative strategies that enhance the overall resiliency of the city's park system in response to challenges such as water scarcity, drought, and extreme heat resulting from a changing climate.

The City of Henderson's Parks and Recreation Department is a two-time recipient of the National Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This award honors public park and recreation agencies, state park systems throughout the United States, and armed forces recreation programs worldwide that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services with fiscally sound business practices.

Informed by extensive analysis and ongoing community engagement, this plan will articulate a new vision for "resilient" parks and recreation in Henderson. It includes the development of resiliency-focused design standards for both existing and future parks, aiming to increase their sustainability in a changing climate and position them as critical social service hubs that serve as a first-line response for Henderson residents during extreme heat emergencies.

The resulting master plan will serve as an actionable roadmap for the department, enabling it to mitigate the existential crisis of climate change. It ensures that future generations of Henderson residents will have access to the same high-quality parks, trails, and programs that current residents enjoy and treasure.
